Words Made Flesh
The Sacramental Mission of Catholic Education
Foreword by Patrick Reilly
Imprint: Catholic Education Press
Forming souls and building culture together form the sacramental mission of Catholic education. These profoundly related goals are laid out by the Church for education, following the general sacramental principle that permeates the whole of Catholic life. This approach seeks conformity to the Logos, the divine mind, that shapes the way disciples think, imagine, and pray. Guided by this approach, the student will be able to contemplate the truth of reality in a holistic and integrated fashion. As sacramental, it also leads to a concrete embodiment in the life of the Christian community and the daily actions of the disciple. A sacramental approach to education draws together the inner and outer life: mind and body, soul and culture, prayer and work, salvation and mission, the individual and community. For the future of society and renewal within the Church, we need nothing less than a reintegration of the person and our communities through the renewal of education, forming students deeply rooted in our heritage and prepared to hand it on in creative ways.

"In Words Made Flesh, Dr. Staudt draws on his extensive learning and practical experience to provide a persuasive, principled, and concrete illustration of a Catholic approach to education that is inspiring, informative, and empowering. His book will be valuable for thoughtful reflection, teacher training, and fruitful faculty discussion."
~Andrew Seeley, Director of Advanced Formation for Educators, Augustine Institute
"Staudt’s use of the term ‘sacramental’ when discussing education is a probing and invitatory challenge. It seems the perfect word to upset our stale way of thinking and bring the ministry of educating back to its rightful place. As the renewal of Catholic education sweeps the nation, we need a word that transcends the other monikers that have been used with noble intentions but then get turned into simply a ‘model’ or ‘method’—and therefore easily dismissed. Staudt provides a compelling and hopeful vision for all Catholic teachers and parents of good will—a sacramental mission is the universal call to all Catholic schools. Most importantly, Staudt shows the reader how easy it can be to start renewal, how much can be done, and how it is all, ultimately, an essential investment by parishes and families in the future of our Church, society, and the ‘eternal vocation of each Christian.’"
~Michael Van Hecke, President, Institute for Catholic Liberal Education
"An ideal blend of rich theological insight and practical application, Words Made Flesh is a relevant and thought-provoking treatise, sure to be of great value to parents and all Catholic educators. This book will hopefully be a catalyst in the renewal of education, imagination, virtue, and culture."
