The Judaism and Catholic Theology series aims to further Catholic theological reflection on Judaism and the Jewish people, for scholars, the lay faithful, and interreligious leaders.
The rationale for this vision is grounded in the call of the Second Vatican Council for Catholic theological studies aiming at a better understanding of the Jewish people and their religion. The Church’s post-conciliar teachings have extended and deepened this call. Indeed, the fathers of the Council taught that mutual respect among Jewish and Catholic communities will be the fruit not only of dialogue but of biblical and theological studies: “[T]his sacred synod wants to foster and recommend that mutual understanding and respect which is the fruit, above all, of biblical and theological studies as well as of fraternal dialogues” (Nostra Aetate 4). Christian and Jewish study of theological matters is, in the vision of the Council, crucial for building and maintaining mutual respect among Jews and Christians.
The Judaism and Catholic Theology series therefore seeks to advance Catholic theological reflection on Jews and Judaism that embraces the fullness of Catholic teaching in a fraternal dialogue with contemporary Jewish theologians. The series features theological reflection on Catholic doctrines on Jews and Judaism, Catholic theologians’ writings on Judaism, and theological reflections on the significance of Jewish thought for Catholic theology today. The series also invites Jewish authors to engage in theological reflection on Judaism and Catholicism, in dialogue with Catholics.
